RUSSIA READY TO SEND PEACEKEEPERS TO SUDAN

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, February 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is ready to make its contribution to the UN peacekeeping operation aimed at normalizing the situation in Sudan.

"In accordance with the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin, up to 50 Russian military observers and about 20 officers of the civil police will be sent to Sudan to take part in the operation," a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Moscow regards the UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan as "an important condition for restoring peaceful life in that country and for ensuring stability in the sub-region."

At a session with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Sudanese First Vice President Ali Osman Taha and leader of the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement/Army John Garang, the UN Security Council discussed the situation in Sudan with the aim of supporting the implementation of the all-embracing agreement on peace that was signed in Nairobi on January 9.

The session participants noted the key role of the African Union's mission, which is currently completing manning its forces in that region, and the necessity to speed up this process for organizing control over the ceasefire regime and measures for ensuring the civilian safety.

The Sudanese representatives reacted with understanding to the position of the UN Security Council members.

Moscow also welcomes the position of the Sudanese representatives, the spokesman said.
