RUSSIAN OFFICERS TO SERVE AS UN MILITARY OBSERVERS IN SUDAN
RIA Novosti
MOSCOW, February 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will send up to 50 officers to Sudan as UN military observers, official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Yakovenko said Monday.
"We support the recommendations of the UN Secretary General on the conduction of full-scale peacekeeping operations in the south of Sudan and plan our direct involvement in it," Mr. Yakovenko said.
"It was decided beforehand to include up to 50 officers from the Russian Defense Ministry in the operation as United Nations military observers. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also instructed the sending of Russian Interior Ministry officers to be part of the UN civil police in Sudan," Mr. Yakovenko said.
Russia has always held a consistent position regarding Sudan, upholding its territorial integrity and sovereignty, he said.
"Russia invariably sticks to the policy course towards inter-Sudanese reconciliation, receiving assistance from the United Nations, the African Union and the East African regional organization (Intergovernmental Authority on Development)," Mr. Yakovenko said.
