RUSSIAN SENATOR CONDEMNS BASAYEV'S APPEARANCE ON BRITISH TV CHANNEL

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, February 7 (RIA Novosti) - Giving air in mass media to terrorists and their representatives can be viewed as an information war, head of the defense and security committee of the Federation Council (the upper chamber of the Russian Federation's parliament) Viktor Ozerov stated.

"The fact that some of our colleagues working in the sphere of the struggle against terrorism give terrorists a chance to place their information not only on web sites but also at information channels, as was the case in Great Britain, can be called an information war," Mr. Ozerov stressed. In this way he commented on the interview of a leader of the Chechen separatists, Shamil Basayev, who is on an international wanted list for his crimes. The interview was broadcast by British TV Channel 4.

According to the senator, the more often "double standards" are used in the struggle against terrorism, the larger the ground for the militants continuing their operation not only in the Chechen Republic but also all across the world will be.

"If we make advances to Maskhadov (an ex-president of Chechnya, the leader of the separatists) and people like him this will bring grief not only to Russia but also to other countries," the head of the committee said.
