RAFAEL'S SPYDER Catches Its Prey
Air Defence System Firing Test is a Success
06 February 2005
Haifa, Israel -- RAFAEL and IAI achieved another milestone in the SPYDER (Surface-to-Air PYthon & DERby Air Defence System) integration venture. SPYDER successfully fired the Python 5 and Derby missiles over RAFAEL’s test range, Shdema in Israel and effectively scored two direct hardbody kills.
The SPYDER radar and command and control unit (CCU) engaged the target drones at long range and short range scenarios. Both launches demonstrated the SPYDER's superior operational capabilities. This firing is another one in a series of missile firings.
SPYDER, a joint RAFAEL and IAI program is a quick reaction, low level Surface-to-Air Missile System designed to successfully counter attacks by aircraft, helicopters UAVs and PGMs. The system provides excellent protection of valuable assets, as well as first-class defence for forces located in the combat area.
The SPYDER system incorporates RAFAEL's most advanced, proven performance Air-to-Air missiles - the Derby active radar (RF) missile and Python 5 a dual waveband Imaging Infra Red (IIR) missile. Both missiles can be launched in Lock-On-After Launch (LOAL) and Lock-On-Before Launch (LOBL) modes of operation, SPYDER missiles have full commonality with the air-to-air missiles version.
SPYDER is an innovative combination of IAI advanced C4I, high performance radar and missile technologies. The system is comprised of a truck-mounted CCU with Elta EL/M 2106 ATAR 3D surveillance radar and truck-mounted Missile Firing Units (MFU) equipped with both IIR and RF missiles. The surveillance radar has advanced ECCM capabilities and can simultaneously track multi-targets. The MFU carries any combination (IIR/RF) of four missiles on a rotatable launcher assembly. Wireless data link communication enables deployment of the MFUs at a distance from the CCU. The system's high mobility allows quick deployment and operational agility.
RAFAEL designs, develops, manufactures and supplies a wide range of advanced defense systems for all branches of the military and homeland security forces. Tailored to its customer's specific needs, RAFAEL provides state-of-the-art, yet cost-effective systems and weapons in the fields of Missiles, Air Defense, Naval Systems, Target Acquisition, EW, C4ISR, Communication Networks, Data Links, Electro-Optic Payloads, Trainers and Simulators, Add-on Armor, Combat Vehicle Upgrading, Mine Field Breaching, Border and Coastal Protection Systems, UAVs and much more.
