Nepal`s former prime ministers under house arrest

New Delhi, Feb 5, IRNA -- Taking the military takeover of the King of Nepal to extreme ends, authorities in Kathmandu today arrested former prime minister and Nepali Congress founder and leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and Nepali Democratic Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Former prime ministers Surya Bahadur Thapa and Lokendra Bahadur Chand have also been put under house arrest. According to the Nepali newspaper `The Kathmandu Post`, former deputy prime minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari, Badri Prasad Mandal, president of the Nepal Sadbhavana Party (Mandal), Pashupati Rana, president of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Amik Serchan, president of the People`s Front of Nepal, have also been placed under house arrest. There are unconfirmed reports that dozens of students and youths were injured in clashes with security forces in Prithvinarayan campus in Pokhara hours after the King seized power. Reports also suggest arson was committed on the streets of Kathmandu after news of the palace coup was made public. 2160/2321/1432
