US pledges defense requirements to Pakistan - statement

Islamabad, Feb 1, IRNA -- The United States has promised to provide 
defense requirements to Pakistan and will actively pursue for their 
early release, a Defense Ministry statement said on Tuesday. 
The promise was made during a meeting of Pak-US Security 
Assistance Working Group (SAWG) held in the Ministry of Defense 
Production in Rawalpindi, it said. 
The statement did not give details of the equipment. 
Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Masood Khan said on Monday that 
Pakistan will apprise the US officials of question of its military 
requirements. 
"The meeting was held in a friendly and cordial atmosphere and 
discussed a wide range of issues concerning the defense equipment 
requirements by the Armed Forces of Pakistan as well as the financial 
management issues related to foreign military funding," the Defense 
Ministry statement said. 
It was co-chaired by Major General Ali Baz, additional secretary 
Ministry of Defense Production and Mr Richard Millies, deputy 
director, Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), United States of
America. 
According to the statement, the visiting delegation informed the 
Pakistani side that some of the defense equipment were already in the 
pipeline while the other were being actively pursued for early 
release. 
"Ms. Kara Bue, deputy assistant secretary for political and 
military affairs, Department of State gave an elaborate briefing on 
Major Non-Nato Ally (MNNA) status to Pakistan by the United States and
said that Pakistan would be able to avail the facilities under the 
provisions of MNNA status." 
Millies, the statement added, deeply appreciated Pakistan`s 
efforts against fighting and curbing the menace of terrorism. 
The meeting was part of the Pak-US Defense Consultative Group 
Forum which will hold its meeting on February 3 in Ministry of 
Defense. 
US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith will attend
the 16th Defense Consultative Group Forum. 
Last year Pakistan and the US held a similar meeting in Washington
DC which was co-chaired by Pakistan Secretary Defense Lt Gen Hamid 
Nawaz Khan, and US Under Secretary of Defense, Feith.
