ABOARD USS EMORY S. LAND (NNS) -- USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) was awarded the Battle Efficiency "E" Jan. 4 from Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet for the sixth consecutive year.

Along with earning the Battle Efficiency Award, the ship also won the Engineering Red "E," Navigation Red and Green "N," Communications Green "C," Damage Control Red "DC," Supply Blue "E," Repair Red "R," Weapons Black "W," Deck Seamanship White "D," Medical Yellow "M," and Dental Yellow "D."

Command Master Chief (SW/SS) Joel Allison, Emory S. Land Command Master Chief, said that the Battle Efficiency "E" Award is an evaluation of the ship's ability to complete its mission if necessary in a combat environment.

"We have proved that we are capable of going into harm's way to do our job," Allison said. He added that the Battle "E" is an award generated by Commander, Submarine Force , U.S. Atlantic Fleet to acknowledge the very best performers in every area, and Land got every award they could get.

He also said the Land crew did a lot in 2004 to prove their battle readiness, such as increasing the quality of life for Sailors aboard the ship and increasing the material readiness of the ship.

According to Emory S. Land Executive Officer (XO), Cmdr. Martin Nagle, the awards show the crew's teamwork.

"It is an indication of sustained quality performance," Nagle said. "It's also a vote of confidence from our commander in our ability to perform our mission."

The XO also said that the award helped to increase the morale of Land Sailors.

"As far as morale is concerned, I think everybody enjoys getting recognized for what it is they do," Nagle said.

He added that there was plenty of teamwork involved from every department and individual on Land to get the award. One example he said was during the ship's Phased Maintenance Availability late last year, where people from every division came together in teams to better the ship.

Land is preparing for next year's Battle "E" through current operations.

"[We plan on working towards the Battle "E" this year] through the training evolutions going on in preparation for the West Africa operation we are on now," Nagle said. "As we train and prepare, we become better skilled, which will keep us battle ready."

Command Master Chief summed up the true meaning of the Battle "E" award.

"The Battle "E" is really a reflection of the pride and professionalism of every Emory S. Land Sailor onboard today," Allison said.

Emory S. Land is currently participating in Gulf of Guinea Operations and is homeported in La Maddalena, Italy.
