Mosque Search Done with Care
Camp Liberty, Baghdad, Iraq - Elements of 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division "Commandos", part of Task Force Baghdad, in conjunction with Iraqi National Guard conducted a search of the Al Khashab Mosque, Jan. 12.
Press reports claiming the mosque and Imam's residence were damaged in the search are false. Multi-National Forces had asked permission to enter, and waited for the caretaker to arrive and allow access to the mosque.
The caretaker could not provide the keys for five locks. Iraqi National Guard Soldiers cut the pad locks. Once cut, the Multi-National Forces replaced the padlocks with brand new locks.
"The allegations that our Soldiers caused damage during this search are unfounded and untrue. The Iraqi National Guard took special care to avoid any damage," said Lt. Col. Michael Infanti, deputy brigade commander. "We asked permission to enter, and once granted, we took the utmost care while conducting the search."
