ABOARD USS KEARSARGE EXPEDITIONARY STRIKE GROUP (Jan. 12, 2005) -- The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit completed its embarkation aboard Kearsarge Strike Group Wednesday for the Expeditionary Strike Group Exercise taking place through Jan. 27 along the Eastern seaboard of the United States.
This at-sea period will allow the MEU to enhance interoperability with Amphibious Squadron-8 and refine its skills in mission planning and execution in preparation for deployment in Spring 2005.
The first part of the exercise involves the 26th MEU supporting the strike group as it conducts scenario-driven Naval missions such as straits transit and show of force along the East Coast.
Beginning Jan. 17, the MEU will be supported by the strike group as it conducts missions based on scenarios scripted by Special Operations Training Group. These missions may include humanitarian assistance; helicopter, mechanized and motorized raids; utilization of the MEU’s forward command element to liaison with State Department representatives; and the establishment of a forward operating base ashore.
This exercise represents the final shipboard training evolution for the MEU prior to its Certification Exercise (CERTEX), where it will be evaluated for the Special Operations Capable designation.
