New hospital opens at Speicher

Forward Operating Base Speicher, Iraq
-- The 67th Combat Support Hospital's contributions to the 1st Infantry Division have gone beyond providing medication and mending injuries, and now include a new building.

After a year of planning and painting, the new 67th CSH opened on Jan. 4 at Forward Operating Base Speicher. The 67th CSH supports the 1st Infantry Division and deployed with it from Wurzburg, Germany, in January 2004.

Brig. Gen. Stephen Mundt, the 1st ID's assistant division commander for support, said the new hospital is the result of hard work and planning. The new building will provide better force protection and more consistent electricity.

"This did not just happen," Mundt said following a ribbon-cutting ceremony. "It became a goal to make this happen. The place you worked out of was OK, but before we left we wanted a new place, and before we left it was going to happen. It's all about this team and being a part of the Big Red One."

Mundt touched on the relationship between the 67th CSH and the 1st ID.

"You will always be a part of Task Force Danger and of the Big Red One," Mundt said. "I thank you for all you do and bring to the fight." (Story by Sgt. W. Wayne Marlow, 1st Infantry Division Public Affairs Office)
