Soldiers Uncover Cache South of Baghdad

Salman Pak, Iraq
- Members of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment from the 1st Cavalry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team uncovered a significant weapons cache New Year's Day in Salman Pak, a small town roughly 12 miles south of Baghdad.

Working from a tip from a local resident, the troops went to a house and searched the backyard. There they found numerous rockets, mortars, RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades), RPG launchers, hand grenades, plastic explosives, fuses, body armor, and NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protective masks.

The Soldiers confiscated all the materials and destroyed them at a separate location.

The owners of the home were not present when the cache was found. The Soldiers from 2-5 Cavalry were taking part in security operations to locate and detain terrorists in the town, preventing them from influencing upcoming elections in Baghdad.
