Raids Deal Insurgents a Bad Hand

Camp Ripper, Iraq - In a continuing effort to disrupt insurgent activities in Al Anbar Province, elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit conducted limited-scale raids over the past 48 hours that detained numerous individuals who have terrorist ties.

In a series of carefully planned raids, an element of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit targeted known terrorist safe houses within the city of Hit.

The individuals detained are considered to be key terrorism facilitators in the region and are responsible for many of the attacks against Multi-National Forces and their Iraqi Security Force partners.

During the raids, the unit uncovered electronic devices, transmitters, and long-range cordless handsets; devices used by anti-Iraqi forces in the production of improvised explosive devices. Also discovered was a mortar position and night vision devices.

While en route to one of the raids, elements of the MEU were engaged by small arms fire from approximately ten anti-Iraqi forces. The Marines directed a close air support mission from a US Air Force AC-130 gunship, which silenced the threat. The Marines pressed forwarded and completed the mission without any casualties.

Multi-National Forces are determined to capture or kill known insurgents by pursuing them where they live and operate. The 31st MEU and their partners in the Iraqi Security Forces continue to enhance security and stability in western Iraq.
