MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- More than 225 Sailors aboard the guided-missile frigate USS Simpson (FFG 56) and its embarked Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron, Light, (HSL) 44, Det. 10 will return to their home port in Mayport, Fla., Dec. 20, after a three-month deployment to the Western Atlantic.

Simpson deployed Sept. 22 as part of NATO's Standing Naval Forces Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) and was the U.S. Navy's representative during its deployment in support of the global war on terrorism.

Six to 10 ships (destroyers, frigates and tankers) are normally attached to the force for up to six months, and the force command rotates on an annual basis among the nations contributing ships to STANAVFORLANT. Canada, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States are the six permanent contributors to this standing force.

During the deployment, Simpson participated in numerous exercises with NATO and U.S. naval forces, and visited 10 cities in the United States, Canada and Bermuda.

Simpson's crew is commanded by Cmdr. R. L. Williamson.
