Marines kill three, capture 13 south of Baghdad
Forward Operating Base Kalsu, Iraq -- U.S. Marines killed three insurgents and captured 13 suspected others in action south of Baghdad on Dec. 14.
Elements of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit engaged the men when it became apparent they were preparing to place a roadside bomb near Mahmudiyah. Marines later searched the site, finding two AK-47 rifles, four mortar rounds and 12 fuses.
Elsewhere, Marines rounded up three suspected insurgents in a raid near Yusufiyah and four more while patrolling near Haswah. Later, Marines operating near Lutafiyah captured six suspects and seized a number of weapons, including 85 AK-47 rifles and four pistols.
The latest detainees raise to 96 the number of suspected insurgents picked up by Iraqi and Marine forces in northern Babil and southern Baghdad provinces since Sunday.
