Iraqi National Guardsmen Attacked in Central Baghdad; Weapons cache Uncovered After Fight
Baghdad, Iraq -- Iraqi National Guard troops came under attack by an unknown number of insurgents in central Baghdad at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 12. No casualties resulted.
The ING unit returned fire. Several hand grenades were thrown at the ING unit, though there were no casualties or damage to equipment. Mortars and rocket-propelled grenades were also used by insurgents against the ING.
Following the firefight, a Task Force Baghdad patrol discovered two recoilless rifles and two 155-millimeter artillery rounds outside a nearby mosque. ING troops entered the Taha Mosque to investigate further.
The incident is still under investigation.
