FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
3 Soldiers, 3 Civilians Killed In Aircraft Accident
KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - Three U.S. soldiers and three civilian air crew members were killed in an airplane accident near Bamyan Province, Afghanistan, on Saturday, Nov. 27.
The CASA 212 civilian fixed-wing aircraft was reported missing on Saturday afternoon after it departed Bagram Airfield on a troop transport and supply mission en-route to Farah and did not arrive at its destination or alternate airfields in the country.
Coalition forces launched ground and aircraft search efforts immediately when the aircraft was reported as missing, and Coalition aircraft received initial indications of an aircraft in distress from an emergency locator transmitter in a mountainous region in Central Afghanistan.
Late Monday, Coalition aircraft saw signs of what was believed to be the aircraft wreckage, but extreme weather and the mountainous terrain complicated search efforts. Yesterday, a ground Coalition rescue and recovery team made it to the accident site and was able to make positive identification of the aircraft and recovered those killed in the crash.
The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin and Department of Defense release.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
