Weapons cache uncovered in Baghdad mosque

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Army News Service, Dec. 1, 2004) -- Iraqi National Guard soldiers searched a mosque in Baghdad's Al Rashid district Nov. 30 after finding mortar rounds in the parking lot next to the facility.

The Soldiers of Company A, 304th Iraqi National Guard Battalion gained permission to search the Shuhada Mosque in Al Rashid's Abu Dascheer neighborhood

after seeing a 60-millimeter mortar round in the parking lot next to the mosque at 2 p.m.

After searching the parking lot's guard shack, they found several weapons. At about 4 p.m., they entered the mosque compound itself and found weapons and insurgent propaganda. The search of the mosque found the following:

2 AK-47s
1 SKS machine gun
1 60mm mortar round
3 drums of ammunition
4 rocket-propelled grenade propellants
3 gas masks
5 bags of mortar propellants
RPG sight

They also found a large supply of medicine and painkillers. Additionally, radios similar to the ones found on insurgents killed during a Nov. 9 firefight with 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, were found.

Elsewhere across Iraq, soldiers of the 204th Iraqi National Guard Battalion discovered a 120mm mortar system hidden near Dojima Nov. 28. The soldiers found the weapons system in a hole and concealed by bushes. The weapon was pointed at a coalition base near Balad.

The latest Iraqi National Guard soldiers graduated from initial entry training at a Coalition base near Baqubah Nov. 29. The soldiers, part of the 213th ING Battalion, will serve in Diyala province near the village of Khan Bani Saad.
