31 MEU Detains 5 Insurgents in Western Iraq

AL ANBAR, Iraq
- Elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit detained five individuals as well as finding a small weapons cache during a raid in the city of Hadithah on the morning of Nov. 26.

A spider hole was discovered in an abandoned building after Marines took small arms fire from insurgents. Various small arms weapons and munitions were seized, including 19 mortar rounds, 2 rockets, 45 pounds of rocket propellant, one half pound of black powder, one tripod, and one 4-inch rocket warhead.

The Marines blew the weapons cache in place.

The Marines of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit have aggressively taken the fight to insurgents operating throughout western Iraq. Their current action, in the wake of the eviction of insurgents in Fallujah by Iraqi and U.S. forces, compliment Operation Plymouth Rock that is being conducted by Iraqi and British forces and elements of the 24th MEU in northern Babil province.
