EADS commissioned to conduct study on key technologies for network-centric operations

Friedrichshafen, 17 November 2004

The German army’s IT office has asked EADS business unit DCS (Defence and Communications Systems) to conduct a study that will bear considerable influence on the army’s planned deployment of network-centric operations (NetOpFü). Such concepts are being developed all around the world as a means of enabling armed forces to work together in networked, multinational, multi-force coalitions.

The purpose of the commissioned study is to identify and assess new communication and information technologies for military command support applications, such as will be needed to realise a future command network based on network-centric operations. The command network will later form part of an integrated network-centric warfare system together with similar networks for reconnaissance and battlefield management. By providing a rapid and accurate situation analysis, such networks allow military commanders to make clear decisions on co-ordinated action in close to real time, and to implement these decisions with the minimum deployment of resources. The study will therefore pay particular attention to the interfaces between the command network and other parts of the warfare system. “This commission confirms our strategic approach as a systems provider which places a clear emphasis on the best technological expertise. Through this project, EADS will once again play a part in optimising the German army’s military command capabilities, which represent a crucial factor in the success of its future missions,” declared Stefan Zoller, CEO of EADS Defence and Communications Systems.

The considerable experience possessed by EADS in the application of complex, innovative technologies in military command systems was the decisive point in the awarding of this contract, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The results of the study will serve as an up-to-date basis for the German army’s planned implementation of a network-centric operations system.

The Defence and Communications Systems (DCS) Business Unit is the “Systems House” of EADS and is an integrated part of the EADS Defence and Security Systems Division (DS).

DS, with revenues of about € 5.2 billion in 2003 and roughly 24,000 employees across nine nations, forms the defence pole within EADS. It offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and homeland security units. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missile systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), battlefield management systems, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, and related services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2003, the Group generated revenues of over € 30 billion and employed a workforce of more than 109,000.
