IRAQI POLICE COMMANDOS, GUARD SWEEP AMIRIYYA
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Ministry of the Interior's 3rd Police Commando Battalion conducted a cordon-and-search sweep operation through Baghdad's Amiriyya district today with the Iraqi National Guard's 303rd Battalion and multinational force elements, seizing weapons and explosives in the home-to-home searches.
The mission, conducted in the early morning hours, resulted in the seizure of one rocket-propelled grenade launcher with two rockets, two 57mm air-to-ground rockets, and 17 AK-47 assault rifles.
Anti-Iraq force contact was made with two snipers and an AIF vehicle traveling down a neighboring freeway, opening fire on the security force.
The commandos performed the sweep with the ING providing security. Multinational force elements on the scene acted in a support and advisory role.
The Iraqi Police Commando Battalions are the MOI's high-end strike force focused primarily on building raid, counter-terrorist, anti-airplane hijacker, kidnapping and other similar operations.
No casualties resulted from the operation.
