Nine Iraqi policemen returning from a training course in Jordan have been ambushed and killed south of Baghdad.

A police spokesman in Karbala says a minivan carrying the police came under attack Saturday near the town of Latifiyah. He says the attackers fled.

Elsewhere, mortar rounds have struck an arms collection site in the Sadr City neighborhood of Baghdad. Reuters quotes hospital officials as saying three people were killed, and at least nine others wounded.

Meanwhile, U.S. warplanes continued to pound suspected militant positions in the city of Fallujah, as U.S. troops in armored vehicles battled insurgents on the eastern edge of the city. There were reports of artillery and gunfire in other parts of Fallujah.
