Networked combat and simulation systems by Rheinmetall DeTec
A smart way to Networked Enabled Capabilities
10/05/2004
Rheinmetall Defence Electronics (RDE) has gained extensive and proven competence in combat and simulation systems. In the light of Force Transformation, it has been a logical step to combine the respective competences to facilitate a smart and secure way to Networked Enabled Capabilities (NEC). With the demonstrator for "Networked Combat and Simulation Systems", RDE again proves its competence and capability for IT based C4ISTAR systems as well as for test environments for Concept Development and Experiment (CDE).
Common to all Force Transformation is the realization of the NEC vision. In principle possible, realisation remains challenging for industry and Armed Forces. This process incorporates substantial risk and requires combined know-how. Open standardisation will be vital for a successful transformation process and should be mandatory.
In this environment, RDE's initiated "Open Community" of leading defence related companies is future oriented. The intention of the "Open Community" is to jointly provide experiences and capabilities. Essential condition is the voluntary commitment of involved companies, to maximize the use of open and available standards on the one hand and to provide open access to former proprietary interfaces on the other hand. This approach is RDE's proposal to facilitate an open and fair partnership between industry and Armed Forces for a successful Force Transformation.
RDE's demonstrator for "Networked Combat and Simulation Systems" is a first step of Force Transformation to NEC following the approach of the "Open Community". Real sensor data, e.g. RDE's BAA or the sight of a Leopard fire control system, are replaced by simulated data gained from RDE's Tactical Simulation system (TacSi). Such sensor data are fed into respective Battle Management Systems such as RDE's FaKoM introduced in the German Army. This approach of the demonstrator may be used e.g. for
* concept development and experiment,
* validation of functions or
* training with combat equipment.
With this demonstrator RDE proves it competence for Transformation and indicates a smart way to NEC beginning with migration of existing combat systems. At the same any combat system set-up may be tested respectively validated by using RDE's TacSi system as a test environment for CDE.
