BAE SYSTEMS Australia Awarded Artillery Orienting Systems For Army

28 Sep 2004

BAE Systems Australia has been awarded a AUD$8 million contract to supply the Australian Army with 16 state-of-the-art Artillery Orienting Systems (AOS).

BAE Systems Australia in its capacity as prime contractor, will team with BAE Systems Artillery Pointing Systems, Edinburgh, UK, to provide the Army with an automated capability, enabling ground troops to determine their orientation and position in all weather conditions independent of the Global Positioning System. The AOS enables the rapid, accurate survey of weapon positions and survey points in support of the Armys artillery assets.

Jim Hanson, BAE Systems Australia Operations Director said, This contract is great news for BAE Systems Australia. It enables us to use over 30 years of company navigation experience to deliver the Army with a highly effective inertial navigation system. The flexibility and user friendliness of the system will prove critical to the successful use of the system in varying operations and deployments. The AOS also has excellent export potential.

The AOS program will be centred at BAE Systems Australias Electro-Optic (EO) centre of excellence located at Holden Hill in South Australia. This facility is equipped with comprehensive assembly and test capabilities complemented with highly skilled team of systems, mechanical, electronic, optical and electronic engineers and production personnel. These support in-country assembly, integration, test, sustainment and upgrade of the AOS and its sub-systems to meet the intent of the Defence Electronic Systems Sector Strategic Plan.

The first of the Artillery Orienting System will enter service in 2005 with the final system being delivered in 2006.
