IRAQI SECURITY FORCES LEAD CENTRAL BAGHDAD OPERATION

BAGHDAD, Iraq- Twenty-four suspected insurgents were captured along with a wide array of weapons and munitions during a 10-hour operation aimed at clearing out terrorist elements in central Baghdad Tuesday.

The operation, involving elements of an Iraqi National Guard brigade and multi-national forces, kicked off at 4 a.m. Tuesday. Raids were conducted throughout the day in nearly every neighborhood of the city's center.

Task Force Baghdad military sources are hailing the operation as a huge success.

Besides the 24 detainees taken in during the operation, the operation netted a large quantity of weapons and munitions. Weapons captured by raids include: two rocket-propelled grenade launchers; one 82-millimeter mortar system; two 60-millimeter mortar systems; 11 AK-47 assault rifles; three multiple rocket launch systems and one sniper rifle.

Munitions captured include: 38 107-millimeter rockets; 17 hand grenades; 12 RPG rounds; 26 mortar rounds (18 60mm, eight 82mm) and one120-millimeter artillery round.

1st Cavalry Division spokesman Maj. Philip Smith said joint security operations conducted in central and eastern Baghdad are aimed at making the streets of Baghdad safer, to allow reconstruction efforts to flourish in the city.
