Senior Afghan Official Survives Roadside Blast

20 September 2004 -- The deputy chairman of the Afghan Transitional Administration, Ne'matullah Shahrani, survived a roadside bomb attack today on his convoy in Afghanistan's northern province of Konduz.

Konduz Governor Mohammad Omar Khan said Shahrani, one of four deputy chairmen in the transitional government of Hamid Karzai, was traveling in a convoy with other cabinet members when the blast occurred.

Local police chief Mutaleb Beg said the bomb was detonated by remote control.

Elsewhere, two U.S. soldiers were killed in a gun battle in southeastern Paktika Province. Two U.S. and six Afghan troops were also wounded in the fighting.

In other developments, the chief of security in Zabul Province, Jailani Khan, said today that suspected Taliban militants beheaded three Afghan soldiers there over the weekend.
