TRIPARTE COMMISSION 8TH MEETING
Kabul and Islamabad, Sept. 18, 2004 - The Tripartite Commission, composed of senior military and diplomatic representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan and the United States, held its eighth meeting in Kabul today.
The commission held an in-depth exchange of views on the security situation and recognized the existing cooperation among the commission members. They discussed ways and means to enhance tri-lateral cooperation for combating terrorism and improving communications.
The three sides strongly agreed upon the need to maintain security for the upcoming Afghanistan presidential election. Representatives from subcommittees on border posts and on military information exchange briefed the commission.
The Pakistani delegation briefed on the Pakistani government's ongoing counter-terrorist efforts. The commission recognized the key roles played by the Pakistani military, Afghan National Army and coalition forces in the ongoing challenge of clearing the border area of terrorist elements.
The Afghan delegation briefed on deployments and operations conducted to date by the Afghan National Army (ANA).
The U.S. delegation briefed Coalition plans to support the elections.
The Commission will meet again in late November 2004.
Lieutenant General Sher M Karimi, Chief of Operations, MOD, headed the delegation which included Dr. Nangialai Tarzi, Afghan AMB to Pakistan; General Hilaluddin Hilal, Deputy Minister of Interior; and Dr. Quadir Amiryar, Director of Policy and Oversight, NSC. Director General For Military Operations Major-General Mohammad Yousaf headed the Pakistani delegation which included Brigadier Waheed Arshad, Director of Military Operation; Brigadier Syed Wajid Ali, Director Military Intelligence; and Mr. Faqir Syed Asif, MFA Director of Afghanistan. Lt. Gen. David W. Barno, commander of the Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan, led the U.S. delegation consisting of Brig. Gen. Charles Jacoby, Deputy Commanding General CJTF-76; Mr. Jon Aloisi, Political Advisor CFC-A; and Capt. Cole, ODRP U.S. Embassy, Islamabad.
