Maoists agree to withdraw call for closure of industries in Nepal
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New Delhi, Sept 15, IRNA -- After weeks of long negotiations and calls from different sections of society, the Maoist-affiliated trade union has reportedly agreed to withdraw its call to close down nearly 50 industries, media reports said quoting sources. According to latest reports, the All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF) has agreed to withdraw its call for closure of industries from midnight Tuesday after the government agreed to withdraw the terrorist tag it has attached to them within a month. Human rights activists working as mediators between industrialists and the ANTUF said they were in touch with the pro-Maoist trade union and were exchanging messages through faxes. They did not provide details. A formal announcement from ANTUF is still being awaited. Earlier, in Tuesday, the Nepalese Home Ministry made public the whereabouts of 54 people who had allegedly disappeared from government custody. The government had constituted a committee to address the demands of the rebels after the latter imposed an indefinite blockade of the capital last month. The rebels later withdrew their agitation amid calls from various sections of society. Over one dozen industries remained closed for the last four weeks while the rebels forced an additional three dozen industries to close down from last Friday. Maoists have been struggling to establish a communist-style government in Nepal to replace the constitutional monarchy. More than 10,000 people have been killed in the insurgency since 1996. 2160/2321/1432
