UPDATE ON HERAT

Kabul, Afghanistan (Sept 12, 2004) - The Afghan National Police and Afghan National Army have localized the unrest caused by five groups of protesters (around 500 people) in Herat to a two-kilometer area.

Troops on the ground report the average age of the protestors is between 15 and 25.

Earlier today, protesters set two fires and ransacked five United Nations and non-governmental organization buildings. The ANP and ANA forces evacuated the U.N. and NGO workers.

Coalition forces have not used force in Herat. They are providing ground and air support to the ANP and ANA as necessary.

Afghan Militia Forces are following the orders of the national government. Two groups of protesters remain in the area. Peaceful demonstrations are permitted and the security forces are standing by. The city is now mostly calm.

At least three U.S. Soldiers and one ANA soldier have been injured. One U.S. Soldier suffered an eye injury, another a shrapnel wound to his shoulder, and the third a broken cheekbone and an eye laceration. The ANA soldier is more seriously injured, and all are receiving medical treatment at the medical aid station in Shindand.
