SEABEES WORK WITH IRAQIS ON BERTHING FACILITY
AL ANBAR Province, Iraq - The Seabees of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Fourteen (NMCB-14) are supplying engineering and quality control to a project awarded to a Turkish contractor who hires Iraqi workers using materials that come from Kuwait and Jordan, making this a truly multinational project.
The project is a three-building berthing facility that consists of two 13,000-square-foot, steel-frame prefabricated buildings and the complete renovation of a 3,000-square-foot masonry building.
Once completed, these three buildings will house 400 people in air-conditioned comfort. The group of buildings shares a dedicated generator to keep the air conditioning flowing.
Despite language barriers, Americans, Turks and Iraqis work side by side on the project. Perhaps part of the reason they are able to work together successfully is because of a common ground they share in the construction trades.
The berthing facilities are only part of an $8.9 million contract awarded to an American contractor with the goal of rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure, revitalizing the Iraqi economy and the creation of jobs for Iraqis. Other projects include $3 million for repair of about 104 primary and secondary schools, $1.8 million for paving village roads in rural Al Anbar province, and another $3 million for the rehabilitation of 29 rural and 1 municipal railway stations. The berthing facilities project employs 15 local Iraqis and the other projects should employ many more Iraqis throughout Al Anbar Province.
