Islamabad, Sept 9, IRNA - Pakistan military and official media confirmed the death of some 50 armed foreigners in a raid by fighter planes in the country`s tribal region close to Afghan border on Thursday. "According to my assessment there were around 50 people in a training camp and all have been killed in the attack," military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan told the private ARY television. The state-run television also reported 50 deaths of what it called foreign terrorists. Meanwhile Pakistan military said in a statement that the security forces hit a "terrorist training camp" and successfully destroyed it. "Pakistan security forces launched precise strike on a foreign terrorist training camp in area Dila Khula of South Waziristan Agency, about 25 km north east of Wana and successfully knocked it out." It said there were confirmed reports of training activity being conducted by foreign elements including Uzbeks, Chechens and a few Arabs. However, unconfirmed reports said locals are among those killed in the early morning attack. They claimed that the people were gathered after offering morning prayers. They said a guided missile hit the meeting, killing 40 people. Ten others were killed as the fighter planes dropped bomb when the people were collecting bodies. "These trained terrorists were there indulging in sabotage and terrorist acts in the country, as was revealed through investigations into the recent terrorist acts," the military said. According to the statement, the facility was knocked out through a "precisely targeted operation which lasted for about two hours" this morning. One unconfirmed report said Taliban were holding a meeting when hit by missile and later by jet planes. The operation came one day after a land mine blast, which hit a military convoy near Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan, injuring three soldiers on Wednesday. Sultan said that the raid was conducted in the light of information extracted from some arrested suspects. Thursday`s offensive appears to be one of the bloodiest in operations in South Waziristan in recent months. Local journalists said that an army convoy came under attack while on its way to area Dila Khula area. Exchange of fire continued for a couple of hours. There was no confirmation by the military.
