Boeing Delivers 200th Super Hornet
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 01, 2004 -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] delivered the 200th F/A-18E/F Super Hornet to the U.S. Navy on Aug. 30, 2004 . The airplane, a two-seat "F" model Super Hornet, was delivered to Air test and Evaluation Squadron VX-9 at Naval Air Systems Command China Lake, Calif.
The aircraft was delivered three months ahead of schedule, maintaining the Super Hornet tradition of delivering aircraft well before the contract delivery date. Super Hornets have been delivered on or below cost, and on or ahead of schedule, since the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet entered operational service in November 1999. The Super Hornet has played a key role in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"Boeing is committed to delivering on its promises to the U.S. Navy - delivering the newest and most advanced fighter/attack aircraft in the DoD arsenal, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet," said Chris Chadwick, Boeing vice president for F/A-18.
In December 2003 Boeing and the U.S. Navy signed a second multiyear procurement contract for 210 aircraft. The contract, valued at $8.6 billion, spans fiscal years 2005 through 2009 and saves taxpayers approximately $1 billion over a typical single-year procurement. The current multiyear contract covers aircraft through fiscal year 2004.
The Super Hornet can perform a broad range of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions during the day or at night, in virtually any kind of weather. Equipped with an aerial refueling system, the Super Hornet also can serve as a tactical airborne tanker. Eleven weapons stations carry a vast array of air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons including precision-guided munitions. The Super Hornet can carry more than 17,000 pounds of ordnance, more than 30,000 pounds of fuel and can reach airspeeds of more than 1.5 times the speed of sound.
An aerospace industry team led by Boeing collaborates to build the Super Hornet. Boeing and Northrop Grumman cooperate to build the fuselage, General Electric manufacturers the engines and Raytheon provides the radar.
