  • Maiden Flight of first Finnish NH90 EADS 17 Sep 2004 -- The first NH90 destined for the Finnish Armed Forces took off for a successful maiden flight on september 15th at Eurocopter’s production site and headquarter in Marignane. The aircraft is the first serial produced NH90 in France The flight was conducted by one test pilot and two flight engineers over more than one hour around the area of Marignane and Marseille under full fly-by-wire conditions, during which high speed levels were reached and the flight envelope of the basic aircraft was tested. The success of the campaign was observed by an official Finnish representative.
  • General Dynamics Acquires TriPoint Global Communications Inc. General Dynamics 17 Sep 2004 -- General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) today completed its acquisition of Newton, N.C.-based TriPoint Global Communications Inc., a privately held provider of ground-based satellite and wireless communication equipment and integration services for video, voice and data applications worldwide.   • Mandate of UN mission in Liberia extended another year UN News Centre 17 Sep 2004 -- A year after it set up the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to stabilize the West African country following an end to 14 years of civil war, the Security Council today extended the operation's mandate for another 12 months and welcomed the progress it was making in disarming the nation's thousands of ex-combatants.
  • RUSSIA / PUTIN VOA 17 Sep 2004 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin is warning of preemptive strikes on terrorists. His announcement came shortly after prominent Chechen warlord, Shamil Basayev, claimed responsibility for the bloody school siege in Beslan two weeks ago. More than 320 hostages were killed in the siege.
  • CONGO/FIGHTING VOA 17 Sep 2004 -- A Congolese army officer says at least fifteen soldiers have been killed as two rival factions of the supposedly integrated armed forces clashed in eastern Congo over the last week. News of the clashes came as the United Nations sharply lowered the number of civilians believed to have been displaced by the fighting in the eastern part of the country.
  • Basaev Claims Beslan Attacks RFE/RL 17 Sep 2004 -- Radical Chechen field commander Shamil Basaev is reported to have claimed responsibility for the school hostage siege in the southern Russian town of Beslan that left at least 320 people dead, most of them children.
