  • Failed attack on Abu Ghraib prison leaves 1 insurgent dead, 7 captured MNF-I/MNC-I 12 Sep 2004 -- A coordinated attack Sunday on the Abu Ghraib prison complex included an early-morning mortar attack, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device and small-arms fire, resulting in the death of one insurgent and the capture of seven others believed to be involved in the attack.
  • IRAQ/FIGHTING VOA 12 Sep 2004 -- Fighting has erupted across Baghdad, starting with several pre-dawn blasts in the Green Zone, the protected area where offices belonging to the Iraqi interim government, coalition forces and foreign embassies are located. At least 35 Iraqis are reported dead in a day-long series of attacks.

  • Supporters Of Former Afghan Governor Sack UN Offices RFE/RL 12 Sep 2004 -- Troops from the Afghan National Army were deployed across much of Herat on Sunday in an attempt to quell tensions over the sacking of provincial Governor Ismail Khan.
  • HERAT INCIDENT CENTCOM 12 Sep 2004 -- At about 8 p.m. Saturday in Herat a coalition vehicle broke down stranding two U.S. soldiers. A crowd throwing rocks approached the U.S. soldiers.
