NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Nearly 700 Sailors will reunite with family and friends here at Naval Station Norfolk when the guided-missile destroyers USS Ross (DDG 71) and USS Ramage (DDG 61) return from their four-month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism (GWOT) Aug. 31.

Under the Fleet Response Plan, the Navy remains committed to deployments not exceeding six-months, unless mission requirements dictate otherwise.
During their deployment, Ross and Ramage conducted taskings in the U.S. 5th and U.S. 6th Fleet areas of operation.

Ross and Ramage departed Norfolk April 30 accompanied by the frigate USS Elrod (FFG 55). Ross performed duties during the deployment varying from Maritime Interdiction Operation (MIO) patrols in the Middle East to D-Day commemorative ceremonies in Northern Europe. Ross also participated in Operation Atlas Shield.

Since her departure April 30, Ramage has operated with U.S., coalition and NATO warships, and participated in exercises NEO TAPON '04 and IRON SIREN '04. Ramage's first duty on deployment was to support the GWOT by conducting extended-MIO operations throughout the Mediterranean Sea.

During this time Ramage made port calls in Malta, Italy, Croatia and France. While in Italy, Ramage sailed off the shores of Anzio to participate in the D-Day 60th anniversary ceremonies. She later participated in various World War II commemorative events held off the southern coast of France.
