CFC-AFGHANISTAN PRESS RELEASE

KABUL, Afghanistan - A Coalition facility in Kunar Province was attacked during the night of Aug. 30, 2004, with a large volume of direct and indirect fire by militants working against the government of Afghanistan.

The attack by the militants lasted approximately four hours and included rockets and mortar rounds. The militants fled to the nearby village of Weradesh. Afghan Security Forces followed by Coalition Forces pursued the militants and conducted a search. Children were injured by one of the militants who detonated a hand grenade and blew himself up as he tried to flee the scene.

The Coalition pursued the fleeing insurgents and destroyed their vehicle. None of the coalition's bombs landed in the village of Weradesh. This was confirmed by an inquiry conducted today.

One Coalition soldier and two Afghan Security Force soldiers were injured. No Coalition members were killed. The Coalition is treating six of the children at Bagram Air Base who were injured by the militant hand grenade. We have no reports of any other civilian casualties.
We are currently looking into the claims we received today regarding the incident, and will provide more information as it becomes available.
