NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- PCU Virginia (SSN 774), the nation's newest and most advanced nuclear-powered attack submarine, arrived Aug. 25 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., following the successful completion of Bravo sea trials.
Virginia's performance in its sea trials reflected the team effort of the crew and the shipbuilders, resulting in a resounding success.
Bravo trials consisted of testing Virginia's acoustic performance and combat systems. One new aspect of Virginia is an automated "fly-by-wire" electronic ship control system that exceeded expectations.
"I've been on four subs in 27 years, and no sub performed as well as this one," said Master Chief Casey L. White, Virginia's top enlisted Sailor.
Virginia will now be conducting a routine maintenance availability to inspect its hull at the shipyard.
Virginia is the lead ship of the first class of submarine designed after the end of the Cold War, specifically for the challenges of the 21st century.
"The Virginia-class ships are capable of entering and remaining in the back yards of potential adversaries undetected, preparing and shaping the battlespace, and if so directed, striking rapidly and decisively. And, because of her modular and flexible design, she is ready to adapt to, and excel at, whatever the future brings," said Vice Adm. Kirkland H. Donald, commander, Naval Submarine Forces Norfolk, Va.
Virginia will be commissioned at Naval Station Norfolk Oct. 23.
The Virginia-class is built jointly by General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn., and Northrop Grumman Newport News in Newport News, Va.
