New HUMVEE® Models To Be Fielded

Aug. 20, 2004

SOUTH BEND, IND. — AM General has announced the latest chapter in the ongoing saga of HUMVEE refinement — the introduction of two new models of the fabled HUMVEE.

The increased payload capacity and turbocharged power of the Expanded Capacity HUMVEE chassis will now be available in the M1097 body configuration as the XM1152, and the M1025 Armament Carrier will be offered as the XM1151. Both models will feature the 6.5L turbocharged diesel engine. The XM1152 will have 5,100 lbs. of payload capacity, and the XM1151 will have 4,220 lbs. of payload capacity, before the installation of additional armor protection or other kits.

Adding the power and payload of the Expanded Capacity chassis to the utility and armament carrier models will allow for the addition of increased ballistic protection kits without degrading essential vehicle performance capability.

Previously, the Expanded Capacity chassis has been available as the M1113 Shelter Carrier and the M1114 and M1116 heavily up-armored Armament Carriers.

“Although the HUMVEE has been in production since 1985, its design is still as revolutionary today as it was when AM General engineers began initial concepts in 1979,” said Craig MacNab, director of public relations for AM General.

The final design met military requirements to replace numerous types of aged vehicles and keep up with swift moving tanks. The requirement was for durability, mobility, and reliability. The unique geometry of the HUMVEE design delivers unparalleled performance. No other light tactical vehicle in the world approaches its capabilities or cost effectiveness.

That doesn’t mean today’s HUMVEEs are the same as those first produced. The HUMVEE is a dynamic vehicle with changes and improvements continually added. For instance, significant corrosion resistance has been added and most components have been upgraded, including the move to a new, larger 6.5-litre diesel engine.

From day one, system developers have continually found new users for the flexible HUMVEE. Initially introduced with a 2,500-lb. payload capacity, increased payload requirements to carry various systems have lead to development of Expanded Capacity HUMVEEs with payloads up to 5,100 lbs. and gross vehicle weight rating (GVW) up to 12,100 lbs.

“As we move well into the 21st century, the workhorse HUMVEE is being called on to carry new sophisticated communications and weapons systems and the current operational environment calls for increased levels of crew protection on more variants of the vehicle” MacNab said.

“The ongoing story of this rugged truck will continue to unfold as new users are found and future operational missions present new challenges.”
