Blast Kills Soldier in Northern Baghdad

WASHINGTON, Aug. 15, 2004 -- A Task Force Baghdad soldier was killed today in an improvised explosive attack, military officials in Baghdad reported.

The attack occurred in northern part of the city around 1:30 a.m., according to a Multinational Force Iraq news release.

No other soldiers were wounded in the attack, the news release stated. The name of the soldier killed is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The military is investigating the incident.

In other news, Iraqi police and Task Force Danger soldiers apprehended a suspect near Balad Ruz early today, according to another news release.

The arrest came as Iraqi police were responding to gunfire at the individual's home. A search turned up one AK-47 assault rifle, one 9 mm pistol and $30,000 U.S. dollars. Iraqi police turned the money over to Task Force Danger soldiers for evidence and are holding the suspect for further questioning.

Meanwhile, in Tikrit, five anti-Iraqi force members were captured near Bayji at about 10:40 p.m. Aug. 14, following an attack on a Task Force Danger patrol.

The attackers fired on the patrol with small-arms fire and rocket- propelled grenades, stated a news release. The patrol returned fire and captured five enemy in the building they were firing from.

The detainees were transported to a Multinational Force Iraq detention facility.
