Pratt & Whitney and U.S. Air Force Open Heavy Maintenance Center for Raptor's F119 Engines

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. August 11, 2004 – Pratt & Whitney (P&W), in partnership with the U.S. Air Force, has opened a new joint maintenance facility for the overhaul of F119 engines at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center (OC-ALC) at Tinker Air Force Base. The F119 Heavy Maintenance Center (HMC) is the result of a partnership between the U.S. Air Force and P&W’s Military Aftermarket Services (MAS) unit to support the U.S. government’s transformational goals for the military. The HMC will be the center of excellence for depot-level support of F119-PW-100 engines powering the F/A-22 Raptor stealth fighter.

The HMC will be managed by P&W’s MAS group and staffed by OC-ALC mechanics. P&W will lead the engine/module repair and overhaul process, from scheduling to providing materials. OC-ALC personnel will perform overhaul and repair activities, including cleaning and inspection services.

Lloyd “Fig” Newton, executive vice president-military engines, P&W, said, “This partnership provides benefits above and beyond the obvious dollar values. More important, there is a transfer of knowledge between Pratt and the customer. By combining our principles such as lean manufacturing and cellular workflow concepts with Tinker’s unmatched experience in depot repair of military propulsion systems, we will both gain valuable insight which will directly benefit the warfighter.”

In April, P&W and OC-ALC earned the Aviation Week Charles B. Ryan Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Award for innovative partnering providing cost-effective readiness to the U.S. Air Force. The Ryan Award is the most prestigious award in the MRO community.
