BAE SYSTEMS Awarded $59 Million For Ground Standoff Minefield Detection System
11 Aug 2004
BAE Systems received a $59.9 million U.S. Army contract for the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) of the Ground Standoff Minefield Detection System-Future Combat System, July 21.
BAE Systems Integrated Defense Solutions (IDS) line of business in Austin, Texas, will develop the integrated system of mine detection, marking and neutralisation to be fielded on the robotic Multi-function Utility/Logistic Equipment (MULE) Countermine variant of the Armys Future Combat System.
We believe we are providing a definitive solution to the challenge of countermine operations, said IDS Vice President and General Manager Kent Jacobson, And we are especially pleased to continue our decade long partnership with the Armys Project Manager for Close Combat Systems (PM-CSS). PM-CCS will oversee BAE Systems work through their Countermine Division, located at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Joining PM-CCS on the Army countermine team is the Armys Research, Development and Engineering Command and the Communications-Electronics Command.
Countermine operations are a significant part of recent Army operations around the world, said IDS Program Manager Scott Beachy. We offer the best of industry technologies for mine detection and neutralisation, and a partnership among industry leaders in their respective fields. The BAE Systems design includes ground-penetrating radar developed by NIITEK, neutralisation based on countermine-shaped charges pioneered by BAE Systems and DE Technologies, and the integration and platform expertise of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.
Detection and disposal of landmines continue to be a major threat to U.S. forces in operations and we have a solid partnership with the Army countermine community, said Jacobson. GSTAMIDS FCS will provide our soldiers assured tactical mobility in the presence of mines through an integrated system of systems working within the larger framework of the Future Combat System.
In addition to GSTAMIDS, other BAE Systems countermine work includes the current SDD effort to develop Mongoose, a rocket-deployed array of countermine-shaped charges for an in-stride minefield assault breaching capability for the Armys Stryker Brigade Combat Teams. Other BAE Systems efforts are the Ground Standoff Minefield Detection System Block 1 Program Definition and Risk Reduction effort, a precursor to GSTAMIDS FCS SDD; and an integrated robotic mine detection and neutralisation system, Mine Hunter/Killer.
