  • Forces Capture Suspected Cell members, Kill Insurgents AFPS 14 Aug 2004 -- Three suspected anti-Iraqi cell members were captured during a cordon-and-search mission near Tuz, Iraq, today, reported Multinational Force Iraq officials.
  • Talks With Iraqi Insurgents Break Down In Al-Najaf RFE/RL 14 Aug 2004 -- Talks between Iraqi insurgents and the country's interim government to end fighting in the holy city of Al-Najaf have reportedly broken down.
  • IRAQ/NAJAF VOA 14 Aug 2004 -- Iraq's interim government says talks to end the standoff in the holy city of Najaf have collapsed. A tense cease-fire had been in place as the negotiations took place. Elsewhere, U.S. and Iraqi officials say about 90 insurgents have been killed in airstrikes and fighting in the cities of Samarra and Hilla.
  • Temporary Truce Reached In Al-Najaf RFE/RL 14 Aug 2004 -- A temporary truce has apparently taken hold in the Iraqi Shi'ite Muslim holy city of Al-Najaf, which is reported calm today after more than a week of heavy fighting.

  • 1/2's Charlie Co. captures IEDs, suspect Marine Corps News 14 Aug 2004 -- Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit seized three improvised explosive devices and detained one suspect during a cordon-and-knock mission outside of the forward operating base here Aug. 14.
  • I MEF Marines assess Al Anbar gravesites Marine Corps News 14 Aug 2004 -- Marines of I Marine Expeditionary Force set off on a three-day convoy July 7, to gather information on mass graves in the Al Anbar Province.

  • Afghanistan: Rival Factions Clash In Herat Province RFE/RL 14 Aug 2004 -- Militia fighters have regularly clashed in Afghanistan's Herat Province over the past two years. The latest clashes are pitting forces loyal to provincial governor, Mohammad Ismail Khan, against those of rival factions.

  • Russia, US to conduct joint naval exercise in Norwegian Sea IRNA 14 Aug 2004 -- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said after his talks with US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Saturday that Russia and the United States would conduct a large-scale joint naval exercise in the Norwegian Sea in September.
  • RUSSIA/RUMSFELD VOA 14 Aug 2004 -- Regional security and cooperation in the war against terrorism topped the agenda at talks between U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Ivanov in St. Petersburg. (Mr. Rumsfeld is on a regional tour that has also included stops in Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan.) Bill Gasperini reports from Moscow, The U.S. and Russian officials also discussed U.S. plans to update an early-warning radar system in Greenland.

  • JFK Rescues Iranian Mariners in Arabian Gulf NNS 14 Aug 2004 -- USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) rescued six mariners from an Iranian cargo dhow Aug. 14, after learning that the vessel was taking on water.

  • BURUNDI/DRC/ATTACK VOA 14 Aug 2004 -- The United Nations says at least 150 Congolese Tutsis have been killed in an overnight raid on a refugee camp in western Burundi. A Burundian Hutu rebel group has claimed responsibility, but survivors say the massacre was carried out by Rwandans, Congolese and Burundians.
  • WFP/DARFUR VOA 14 Aug 2004 -- The World Food Program says it has reached an agreement with two rebel groups in Sudan's troubled Darfur region to give the agency access to areas under their control, so the WFP can assess food needs at camps for internally displaced people.
  • Cease-Fire In Georgia Takes Effect RFE/RL 14 Aug 2004 -- A cease-fire went into effect today between Georgia and its separatist South Ossetia region.

  • VENEZUELA/REFERENDUM VOA 14 Aug 2004 -- In Venezuela, preparations are underway for a recall referendum Sunday to determine if President Hugo Chavez should leave office. Opponents of the controversial leader are expressing confidence that their effort will succeed. But Chavez supporters are bolstered by polls showing a tight race.
