Afghans Soldiers And Police Chief Killed In Ambush
21 July 2004 -- Officials say 11 Afghans, including a former police chief, were killed in an ambush today in Helmand Province.
Helmand government spokesman, Haji Mohammed Wali, said the victims were government soldiers who were ambushed on a highway. He said it was unclear if the attackers were antigovernment militants, drug smugglers, or factional rivals.
In neighboring Uruzgan Province, troops killed six suspected militants in a shoot-out overnight. A local mayor, Amir Jan, said the militants were thought to be loyalists of the ousted Taliban regime.
