BAE SYSTEMS reveals Innovative All-IP Communications Solution

21 Jul 2004

BAE Systems C4ISR has launched Sentinel, its innovative solution to tomorrow’s battlespace communications needs.

Sentinel takes advantage of the huge investment in civil communications technologies using Internet Protocol, a fundamental building block of the World Wide Web. It supports the delivery of Network Enabled Capability, whilst ensuring that existing investment in bespoke defence communications can be taken into the future and commercially funded developments can be introduced into the military domain.

Paul Laity, Managing Director of BAE Systems C4ISRs Communications & Defence Infrastructure business, commented, “Sentinel provides a complete, future proof solution. Building on breakthroughs in developing tactical All-IP systems for UK requirements, we have created a new approach to military networks for customers across the globe seeking the cost-effective means to advance their national communications needs.”

Within Sentinel, both voice and data traffic are managed as a single, simple entity to provide robust, high capacity, scalable services. Networks are managed remotely via the industry standard Simple Network Management Protocol using an intuitive graphical user interface.

Sentinel enables the latest generation of Voice over Internet Protocol telephones to be employed to provide military features. Voice traffic passes directly between phones, with data compression techniques delivering high quality services in minimum bandwidth.

Sentinel requires no centralised database or management function. It copes with intermittent bearer availability and network fragmentation, and features graceful network degradation

Sentinel uses a modern architecture to support interoperability across levels of command. It features a wide range of commercial and military interfaces, and can be used to support the progressive migration of legacy systems into replacement technologies. It converts traffic formats between linked networks and provides interconnections between, for example, All-IP systems and EUROCOM or commercial systems. It can also act as a fully featured tactical switch, providing military features within a network or at a single location.
