BAE SYSTEMS Demonstrates Its Wireless Data Link System At FI2004

20 Jul 2004

BAE Systems Avionics Group has begun demonstrating its wireless data link system at Farnborough International 2004. The system is displayed inside the Companys pavilion, and is also installed on its Mil Mi-24 helicopter, positioned outside in BAE Systems corporate livery. It is the first time that the System has been connected to an aircraft at an exhibition and marks the beginning of the run-up to its launch next month.

Simon Cooper, Business Development Executive said Our Wireless Data Link System enables crew members to communicate with each other without being physically tethered to the platforms intercom system. In removing the need for long leads and hand signals, the system resolves the problems of tangled and snagged wires that can restrict movement and become accidentally disconnected at critical moments. The technology enhances operational efficiency whilst improving the ability of operators to meet their duty of care to aircraft and ground based staff. BAE Systems is delighted to be demonstrating it as part of FI2004.

The wireless data link system consists of two units. One configured to interface with the Platforms intercom system, the Platform Interface Unit (PIU); the other configured to be worn on the body of the operator, the Operator Interface Unit (OIU). It requires minimal integration and has been successfully demonstrated both in the UK and US on a range of airborne platforms including EH101, Sea King, UH-1 and C130J Hercules.

BAE Systems acquired its Mil Design Bureau Mi-24 aircraft and repainted it in corporate livery in July 2003 as part of the companys 5 million on-going investment in support of its efforts to secure orders for avionics upgrades business for both fixed wing and rotary legacy platforms.
