MNF-Iraq: Combined forces detain four, foil IED attack
MOSUL, IRAQ (July 16, 2004) - Iraqi National Guardsmen and soldiers from the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) detained four people wanted for anti-Iraq activities and Iraqi police thwarted a roadside bomb attack Thursday.
Soldiers of the 102nd Iraqi National Guard Battalion conducted a cordon and search with the assistance of multinational forces, near the city of Humeria in an attempt to apprehend criminals suspected of carrying out attacks against Iraqi military compounds. The search resulted in the detainment of four individuals, as well as a car, motorcycle, ammunition and various documents and maps of Iraqi infrastructures. All of the suspects remain in custody and no soldiers were injured during the operation.
Mosul police located an improvised explosive device in the northwest neighborhood of Nissan. Iraqi police secured the scene with the help of soldiers of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment until an Iraqi Explosive Ordnance Disposal team could destroy the device. While securing the site, soldiers and police officers encountered small arms fire from a car and multinational forces pursued the suspect vehicle. Soon after, Mosul police officers were engaged by small arms fire from an adjacent building. Police conducted a hasty search of the suspected building but found no suspects. The Iraqi EOD team destroyed the explosive and no injuries or damages were reported.
