Program Executive Office for Tactical Aircraft, NAVAIR Patuxent River, MD.

NAVAIR announced today that their Air-to-Air Missile Program Foreign Military Sales program has entered into an agreement with the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) for a purchase of the next generation Sidewinder missile, the AIM-9X. The AIM-9X will be employed on the RDAF F-16 aircraft.

"This is a very exciting time for our 9X program," said PMA-259 Program Manager Captain Scott Stewart. "Our entire team has worked very hard to develop and field this missile. Having successfully met the requirements of the U.S. Warfighter, we are pleased to see AIM-9X satisfying the needs of our International partners."

The AIM-9X is an infrared-guided, short-range air-to-air missile that provides first-shot/first-kill capability and agility. The system design approach incorporates a fifth-generation staring Focal Plane Array (FPA) seeker for robust guidance performance, and Infrared Countermeasure (IRCM) resistance and jet vane control for extremely agile turning performance.

The AIM-9X is a joint U.S. Navy and Air Force program with the Navy designated as the lead service. The AIM-9X was approved for full-rate production in May, and is built by prime contractor Raytheon Corporation of Tucson, Ariz.

Sidewinder deliveries to Denmark are scheduled to begin in 2006. Denmark is the fourth international purchaser of the AIM-9X, joining Switzerland, South Korea and Poland.
