Inauguration of NATO Maritime Component Command Naples

Naples, 2 July 2004 In a ceremony on Nisida Island on 5 July
2004, the Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe (NAVSOUTH) will be
deactivated and the new Component Command Maritime Naples will be
activated, the headquarters will be renamed and a new mission will
commence.
As part of the new NATO Military Command Structure and following the
activation of Joint Force Command Naples (JFC(N)), the Component Command
Maritime Headquarters Naples (CC-Mar HQ Naples), under the Command of
Admiral Ferdinando Sanfelice di Monteforte, Italian Navy (Mar-COM
Naples), will conduct military maritime operations in support of
the Joint Force Commander Naples, Admiral Gregory G Johnson, United
States Navy.
Mar-COM Naples' responsibilities include preparedness to conduct the full
range of military maritime operations, contribution to effective crisis
management, enhancement of peace, security and the promotion of
stability.
Mar-COM Naples will continue to command Operation Active Endeavour,
NATO's maritime contribution to the fight against terrorism which has
been conducted in the Eastern Mediterranean since 26 October 2001 and
which was broadened on 16 March 2004 to include the entire Mediterranean
sea.

Media organisations wishing to register representatives for the events must provide - by fax or e-mail - full name of the journalists, their identification number, and model/licence plate of any vehicle requiring access to Nisida Island; please note that access will only be granted to authorised vehicles.
For security reasons access to journalists not registered by the set deadline cannot be guaranteed.
