FORWARD OPERATING BASE WARHORSE, Iraq (Army News Service, June 28, 2004) - About 60 insurgents were killed June 24 when they attacked Task Force Duke and Iraqi Police Services in the city of Baqubah.

Simultaneously, Forward Operating Base Warhorse, the Blue Dome, Diyala Police Station, and the Civil Military Operations Center came under attack using IEDs, RPGs and small arms fire. Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery Regiment conducted several counter-mortar attacks and fired in support of troops and Iraqi Police Services engaging the enemy.
At about 10:30 a.m., Task Force 1-6 identified three strong points in vacant buildings from which anti-Iraqi forces were directing attacks against Soldiers and police near the Baqubah Soccer Stadium. Coalition aircraft attacked the strong points with three 500-pound GBU-12 bombs and one J-DAM, successfully destroying the AIF positions without significantly damaging surrounding buildings.
TF 1-6 secured the area with minor contact and recovered several mortar systems, numerous RPGs, weapons, and countless ammunition of all types.
Diyala Governor Abdullah and Task Force Duke commander Col. Dana Pittard appeared jointly on Diyala Television to urge the population to remain calm and they said that all key government buildings remained under control.
