Coalition officials in Iraq say a suspected car bomb in Hilla, south of Baghdad, has killed 17 Iraqis and wounded 40 others.
Saturday's massive explosion came just four days before the United States transfers power to Iraq's interim government.
Earlier, in Baquba, insurgents attacked the offices of a major Shi'ite political party and blew up the local headquarters of Iraq's interim prime minister, Ilyad Allawi. Three people were killed. Further north a car bomb killed one person in Arbil.
And a U.S. soldier was killed after his patrol came under attack in central Baghdad.
Meanwhile, Iraq's interim prime minister, Ilyad Allawi, told CBS news the violence could force a delay in elections due to be held by the end of January. And in the Independent on Sunday newspaper, Mr. Allawi wrote his government is making plans to offer an amnesty to Iraqis who acted against the U.S-led coalition without committing crimes. He says the deal is aimed at isolating foreign fighters.
