Office of the Spokesman
June 25, 2004

STATEMENT BY ADAM ERELI, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN

Additional United States Assistance for Humanitarian Activities in Chad and Sudan

The United States is providing an additional $14 million in emergency support for humanitarian assistance activities in eastern Chad and the Darfur region of western Sudan. This assistance is part of an allocation announced by the President on June 24, 2004, from the Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund. It includes $8 million for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to provide assistance to Sudanese refugees in Chad; $5 million for the International Committee of the Red Cross for emergency aid in Sudan's Darfur region and in Chad; and $1 million for non-governmental organizations and administrative costs.

Including this new funding, the United States has provided over $110 million to support the needs of the people of Darfur since the beginning of the crisis.

The humanitarian situation on both sides of the border remains dire and additional donor support for the international relief effort is urgently needed. The United States encourages other donors to respond.
